This past week things got a little more challenging and timing is everything while trolling for rainbow trout. We spent the entire time on the west end of the lake from Windy and Gilner Points to the dam. Most fish were caught along the north shore some very close to shore but many were way into the middle of the lake. No spots were super reliable for times but many areas would turn on within a three hour trip so long as we changed up lures, depths and speeds. Leaded lines were running at 3 to 4 colors most of the week and down riggers stayed 3, 4 and 13, 14 feet. The surface had its moments flat lining PK crank baits, various Rapalas, SC Shiners, Flicker Shads and flies at dawn and dusk. Hottest lures of the week were UV red Needlefish, sm to med sized brown trout Rapalas, PK Lures proto type flutter fish, crank baits and flies, lots of Little Warriors but Heavens Door a favorite, chartreuse wee Dick Nite and night crawlers. Within three hours 6-22 fish were caught at any time of day. Timing is unpredictable and mornings can be a HIT or MISS. Mid day through dusk is still the most consistent and full of spurts where doubles, triples and several times FOUR fish on at once. If the trout are not biting you should keep moving and tinkering your depths and stay determined you will catch your limit. The weather has been spectacular and scenery is incredible. It’s the perfect time to come to Big Bear Lake to fish with family and friends.
